There are still nomads. There were times when all men were nomads; those times are long gone. But there are still, in the heart of Africa, thousands and thousands who spend their lives roaming with their animals across these lands parched of pasture and water. In the southwest of Mali, near the border with Mauritania, in the heart of the Sahel, we spent days and days in nomadic herders' camps. The trip gave us a glimpse into a world that already seems otherworldly, trying to understand how people live so far away from each other.They are different: they don't send their children to school because they are going to be shepherds anyway; they are Islamic, they can marry two or more women - who suffer, as girls, from clitoral ablation; they live with the bare necessities, deprived of so many things that seem indispensable to us: no electricity, no internet, no media, no houses, no cities, outside the state, in freedom.They are people who might seem to us to belong to other times, but they belong to these times: we talk many afternoons in the sunshine on a mat in the dust about their right and their will - or lack of it - to remain as they are. We also talked about their days, their hopes, their future. We tried to know them, to understand them. And we did it, of course, to tell the story: a film made of images and voices that will bear witness to the life of the penultimate nomads, the shepherds of Mali.
